Anime is superior
Anime covers thematic territory Western animation almost never touches. Attack on Titan explored fascism, memory manipulation, and the moral complexity of genocide from the perspective of perpetrators. Evangelion used a mecha action framework to portray severe depression, dissociation, and failed relationships with terrifying psychological specificity. Monster is a serial killer thriller with the narrative depth of literary fiction. These are stories for adults, made as animation, with no concession to the assumption that animation is for children. Western animation mostly still operates under the assumption that animation equals family-friendly content — even when Pixar does an adult film it needs to be about a child processing grief through metaphor. Anime simply doesn't have that constraint. That creative freedom produces a wider range of artistic achievement.
Miyazaki's films prove that the best anime operates at a level of visual storytelling that Western animation rarely matches. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, The Wind Rises — these films communicate through image and movement with a density that is closer to poetry than entertainment. The backgrounds in Studio Ghibli films are hand-painted at a level of detail that serves the emotional content of the scene. Western animation prioritises character expressiveness. Anime prioritises world.
demon slayer's entertainment district arc has better action choreography than most live action films. mappa and ufotable changed what animation can look like and the west has nothing comparable.
anime is basically a zero-knowledge proof of good storytelling. you don't need to understand the culture to verify the output is valid. zk-rollup my emotions with one cour of vinland saga.
The scope of subject matter is the clearest superiority argument. Vinland Saga is a meditation on pacifism and revenge set in Viking-era Europe. Mushishi is slow, atmospheric folklore horror. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a 110-episode space opera about the philosophical tension between democracy and aristocracy. Planetes is hard sci-fi about space debris workers grappling with existential meaning. No other animation tradition comes close to this range of intellectual and emotional register. Western animation has breadth in visual style but not in subject matter. Anime has both.
Western animation holds its own
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of the most technically innovative animated films ever made — hand-drawn comic book textures, misaligned Ben-Day dots, different frame rates per character to represent different animation styles within a single film. It won the Academy Award and changed how the industry thinks about visual language. Pixar's filmmaking across Toy Story, Wall-E, Inside Out, and Soul represents a level of emotional storytelling that functions for audiences across ages and cultures simultaneously. These are genuine artistic achievements that stand with anything in world animation. The comparison is also unfair because it cherry-picks. For every Attack on Titan there are 50 generic isekai light novel adaptations. Japan produces enormous amounts of derivative, low-effort seasonal content. Comparing the best of anime to the average of Western animation isn't honest. Compare best to best and the gap narrows considerably.
The 'animation is for kids' constraint is loosening. BoJack Horseman, Arcane, Primal, Invincible — these are adult Western animated series that tackle heavy themes without the family-friendly filter. Arcane in particular was widely praised for its visual artistry and narrative complexity. The constraint anime fans cite is real historically but less true now.
The 'superior' framing is doing too much work. Into the Spider-Verse achieves things technically that no anime has attempted — simultaneous use of multiple frame rates to characterise different Spider-People is genuinely novel. Pixar's Inside Out 2 was the highest-grossing animated film of 2024. The quality ceiling in Western animation is as high as anime — the floor is different. Western studios make fewer titles with higher production values per title. Anime studios make enormous volume with wildly varying quality. Comparing mediums by their peaks rather than their averages is cherry-picking.
